“Staying Prayed Up”: A Poem

Share Article:

When the uncertainty of the pandemic caused empty chairs in the classroom
And, the university transitioned to virtual learning--- we all learned how to Zoom

     I Stayed Prayed Up!

When facial masks caused a lack of socialization with my classmate
And, I wondered if I would ever see my graduation date

     I Stayed Prayed Up!

When the changes in clinical hours left me feeling robbed
And, fear, anxiety, depression, resulted in many hours where I just sobbed

     I Stayed Prayed Up!

When many of my family members became hospitalized or would ultimately expire
And, questions of whether a career in nursing was smart, could I remain? Retire?

     I Stayed Prayed Up!

When banned or restricted visitations resulted in communication by phone
And, witnessing so many patients suffer and experience death alone

     I Stayed Prayed Up!

Despite the hardships encountered when my spirit felt broke
The support from faculty, family, friends, and the use of religious practices to cope
And, it was my unwavering faith in God that provided solace, optimism, and hope.

     I Stayed Prayed Up!
     I Stayed Prayed Up!
